3 Features in the 2026 Kia Sorento HEV That Make a Difference on Summer Road Trips

A well-executed summer road trip has more to do with the vehicle than most people plan for. The 2026 Kia Sorento HEV is built around a 1.6 L turbocharged hybrid powertrain that produces 227 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque combined, with AWD standard across all trims and a combined fuel economy rating of 7.0 L/100 km. That powertrain foundation matters on a long drive — but it's three specific features that make the Sorento HEV particularly well-suited to summer travel.

Feature 1: Highway Drive Assist 2 — The Long-Haul Driver's Advantage

Highway Drive Assist 2 (HDA 2), available from the EX trim up, is a driver assistance feature built specifically for sustained highway use. It works by combining forward-looking radar and camera sensors with the vehicle's navigation system data. Once active on a qualifying controlled-access highway, HDA 2 manages steering inputs to keep the Sorento centred in its lane, maintains a set following distance from traffic ahead, and can automatically adjust speed as the posted limit changes.

On a Manitoba summer highway — the kind of long, straight stretch where cruise control alone is all most vehicles offer — HDA 2 reduces the cognitive load of driving meaningfully. The driver remains responsible for the road at all times, but the system takes on the sustained effort of minor steering corrections and speed management across hundreds of kilometres.

HDA 2 is paired on the EX trim with Forward Collision Avoidance Assist 2 (FCA 2), which adds Lane-Change Oncoming Detection and Evasive Steering Assist to the standard collision-avoidance suite.

Feature 2: Navigation-Based Smart Cruise Control — Speed That Reads the Road Ahead

Standard Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go is included on the Sorento HEV LX trim and handles following distance and speed in traffic. At higher trims, Navigation-Based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC) adds a layer that standard cruise control can't replicate: it reads the navigation map ahead and proactively adjusts vehicle speed before you reach a curve or a posted speed limit change on the highway.

Where standard SCC reacts to the car immediately in front, NSCC acts on what's coming. On highway curves, the system calculates the appropriate speed reduction based on the curve's geometry and decelerates before you arrive. When the posted speed limit changes — as it does at every junction and work zone — the system can adjust to the new limit automatically, provided the feature is enabled in settings.

On a multi-day trip covering stretches of Trans-Canada highway with frequent town transitions and variable-speed zones, the difference between reactive and proactive cruise control is tangible. NSCC is particularly useful in Manitoba where long stretches of controlled-access highway alternate with lower-speed zones around communities.

Feature 3: 110V Invertor and Smart Power Liftgate — Practical Utility for Every Stop

Two features in the Sorento HEV's EX and SX trims address the practical reality of life outside the vehicle on a road trip.

The 110V invertor makes the Sorento HEV a mobile power source. At a campsite, a cabin with limited power access, or a rest stop, it can power a laptop, a portable air compressor, a small cooler, or a device charger. This is not a USB port — it draws from the vehicle's electrical system and provides standard household current.

The smart power liftgate handles loading and unloading without requiring a free hand. Standing behind the vehicle for three seconds with the Smart Key in a pocket triggers the liftgate to open automatically. It closes the same way when you walk away. On a trip with a full cargo area and multiple stops, hands-free access to 2,139 L of space behind the first row removes a recurring friction point.

The Sorento HEV's cargo capacity at each configuration:

  • Behind 3rd row: 357 L
  • Behind 2nd row: 1,090–1,274 L
  • Behind 1st row: 2,139 L
  • Fuel economy on the road: 7.2 L/100 km city / 6.7 L/100 km highway / 7.0 L/100 km combined
  • Fuel tank: 67 L
