Prairie Winter Traction: Inside the Standard All-Wheel Drive on the 2027 Kia Sorento Hybrid

Long, open roads, blowing snow and icy intersections ask a lot of a family SUV. For buyers comparing three-row hybrids, all-wheel drive is often the first box to check. On the 2027 Kia Sorento HEV, that box is already checked on every trim.

This guide looks inside the Sorento HEV’s standard all-wheel drive: how it works, which systems support it, and what changes from the LX to the EX and SX. If traction is your top priority this winter, here is what you need to know before you choose a trim.

How Active On-Demand All-Wheel Drive Works

The Sorento HEV’s AWD system watches for wheel slip and road conditions. When the system determines there is a need for more traction, it distributes power to all four wheels automatically. You do not need to press a button or select a mode for it to work.

That on-demand approach suits winter well. On a cleared, dry highway, the system manages power for efficient cruising. When a front tire hits an icy patch at a stop light or a drift across the lane, power is shared with the wheels that still have grip.

The hybrid powertrain adds to the picture. A 1.6 L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine works with a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor to produce 227 hp and 258 lb-ft of combined output. Electric motors provide their torque from a stop, which helps the Sorento HEV pull away smoothly on packed snow.

The Systems That Support AWD

All-wheel drive does its best work alongside other standard systems. Every 2027 Sorento HEV includes:

  • Electronic Stability Control to help keep the vehicle on its intended path when a tire loses grip
  • Anti-Lock Braking System and four-wheel disc brakes for controlled stops
  • Hill Assist Control to help hold the SUV when starting on an incline
  • Downhill Brake Control to help manage speed on steep, slippery descents

Drive Mode Select is standard as well, along with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System helps you keep an eye on pressures as cold air lowers them.

Built for Blowing Snow and Long Drives

Traction is only part of winter driving. Visibility and comfort matter on long, cold trips, and the Sorento HEV covers both. LED fog lights, heated power side mirrors and dual-zone climate control with automatic defog are standard. The PTC heater and second- and third-row heating ducts help warm the whole cabin.

Kia Connect is standard with Remote Start and climate control, so you can warm the Sorento HEV before you step outside. Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Lane Following Assist 2 help on long highway stretches, and the SX adds Highway Driving Assist 2.

The 174 mm minimum ground clearance helps the Sorento HEV handle drifting snow and ruts on less-travelled roads, and the 67 L fuel tank gives you range between stops.

Pair AWD With the Right Tires

All-wheel drive helps put power down. Braking and steering depend on how well the tires grip. Every Sorento HEV rides on 19-inch alloy wheels with 235/55R19 tires, and a matched set of four winter tires in that size gives the AWD system and stability control more grip to work with. A temporary spare tire is standard on every trim.

Which Sorento HEV Trim Is Right for You?

Every trim shares the same AWD system, powertrain and ground clearance, so your choice comes down to comfort and technology.

The LX gives you standard AWD, heated front seats, LED fog lights and Kia Connect Remote Start, with seating for seven.

The EX adds a heated steering wheel, LED projection headlamps with Low Beam Assist and a Smart Power Liftgate, still with seven seats. For most families facing long, cold winters, the EX is the sweet spot.

The SX adds heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, a Surround View Monitor, a rain sensor and Highway Driving Assist 2, with six-passenger seating.
