Kia and Variablegrid, One Year In: What the Expanded Partnership Adds
October 08 2026,
Home charging is the question that stalls many Manitoba EV shoppers before they ever book a test drive. Kia’s partnership with Variablegrid started as an answer to the electrical side of that question. After one year, it also answers the “what do I get back?” side.
The expansion is called Variablegrid Plus. Here is what it adds, what carries over, and what it means for a driver sizing up a Kia EV at home.
What Variablegrid Plus Adds to the 2025 Partnership
The original partnership, announced on August 21, 2025, made Kia the first automotive brand in Canada to work with Variablegrid Adaptive Power Inc. Its job was hardware: an Energy Management System (EMS) and home charger sold at Kia dealerships, built to get Level 2 charging into older homes without a costly panel upgrade. Buyers could even roll the cost into their vehicle financing.
On August 27, 2026, Kia Canada announced the expansion. Variablegrid Plus runs through the federal Clean Fuel Regulation program and pays you for charging at home. You sign up for a 3-year subscription at an EV-certified Kia dealership, and the program is open from now until 2030.
Once the subscription activates and you start charging at home, you earn a reward on every eligible kilowatt-hour. Kia’s own example uses an EV4 driven 20,000 kilometres a year. The more you drive, the more you earn.
That makes Kia the first manufacturer partnered with Variablegrid to pay EV owners directly for home charging. The rewards are separate from the charger hardware. The hardware solves your panel capacity. The subscription pays you for using it.

What Stays the Same
The Energy Management System works exactly as before. Think of it as a traffic controller for your home’s electricity. It monitors your household usage at all times and sends whatever power is spare to your charger.
When household demand drops, charging ramps up. When appliances turn on, it scales back. It adjusts in 1-amp increments, so your EV charges as fast as your existing service allows without overloading it.
Installation stays straightforward. The system adds just 10 to 15 minutes to a typical charger install, with no electrical upgrades and no waiting on utility approval. Normal permitting still applies.
Your charging routine does not change either. The brochure puts it plainly: no change to how or when you charge.
What This Means for Manitoba Buyers
Over half of homes in Canada can’t support Level 2 charging without expensive upgrades. If your home is older, the Energy Management System is the piece that removes that barrier. The subscription then turns the charging you were going to do anyway into a steady return.
The journey is simple:
- Enroll at an authorized Kia dealership.
- Install a qualifying Variablegrid home charging solution.
- Charge your Kia EV at home.
- Earn rewards on eligible charging, withdrawable from your Variablegrid account once it reaches the payout threshold.
One requirement matters for planning. Eligibility calls for an existing or newly purchased Variablegrid charger. Buying the hardware bundle together with the 3-year subscription brings additional upfront savings on the charger itself.
High-mileage drivers benefit most, since rewards track the kilowatt-hours you actually put into the car. Because the subscription runs three years, it suits an owner who plans to keep the vehicle and charge at home every week.
Kia has also introduced three affordable EVs, the EV3, EV4 and EV5. Paired with Variablegrid, the cost of owning one at home becomes easier to picture before you sign.
Your Kia EV Home Charging Plan Starts Here
Variablegrid Plus gives Kia EV owners adaptive home charging that works with the power already in the house, plus a 3-year subscription that rewards eligible charging. The hardware handles capacity, the subscription handles the payback, and your routine stays the same.
